What the Twenty Questions Cover
The test on this page draws from the general bank — material every state handbook teaches the same way. The mix is fixed:
| Section | Questions |
|---|---|
| Rules of the road | 9 |
| Road signs | 8 |
| Pavement markings | 3 |
Sign questions use vector drawings built to the federal MUTCD spec, and marking questions use drawn road scenes, so what you see is the clean, standard version of each sign and line rather than a weathered photograph.
General First, Then Your State
What a solid yellow line means, who goes first at a four-way stop, how much following distance to keep — these read the same in every handbook, so they belong in this shared test. Anything that varies by state does not appear here. Speed limits, learner-permit conditions, alcohol thresholds, and similar facts are asked only on the page for the state they belong to, and each one is verified by two authors working independently. Every state has its own 20-question test — all 50 plus Washington DC — and the full index sits below this quiz.
About the Phrase DMV Practice Test
Many people call this kind of page a DMV practice test. Green Light is an independent site with no connection to any DMV or state agency, and none of its driving test questions come from an official exam bank. What the questions cover is the handbook knowledge those exams draw on: signs, rules of the road, and markings.

One Deliberate Gap
Commercial driver (CDL) material is not covered anywhere on this site. It follows a different rulebook and does not mix cleanly with permit study. Motorcycle knowledge, on the other hand, has its own 20-question test built on the MSF curriculum.
